About the Program
In the EPH Somerville Preschool Cooperative, parents and teachers
work together to create an environment in which children learn from
one another, the parents, and the teachers. Together, teachers and
parents plan learning experiences that are developmentally appropriate
and reflect children's current interests. While in the classroom,
both parents and teachers attend to children's feelings, listen
to their ideas and participate in the children's play. Through interaction
with the children, parents gain insight about each child's development
and interests. The parents and teachers use these insights to design
a program centered around the children. Parent participation in
the program includes scheduled time in the classroom, attendance
at monthly coop meetings, and a variety of program management duties
such as community outreach, newsletter production and distribution,
provision of specialty snacks and supplies, and fundraising.
Program Goals
The EPH Somerville Preschool Cooperative is dedicated to providing
an affordable, high quality, stimulating environment in which children
can grow, explore, learn, make friends and, most of all, have fun.
A parent's presence in the classroom eases children's discovery
of themselves as a member of a larger community. It also communicates
to children that parents value and can participate in their education.
And the presence of parents provides a wider base of knowledge and
interests when responding to and supporting each child's wonder
and curiosity in the classroom.
